Company D Muster Roll, 30 June 1861

On June 30, 1861 the return for Company D shows one officer, four sergeants, three corporals, one musician and 66 privates, for a total strength of 75 officers and men with eight sick, on detached service or extra duty.

Desertion was a constant problem - 29 men deserted between Jan. 1 and June 30, including the first sergeant, a musician, and a private whose wife had been a laundress. Also one company commander resigned as the company moved to Washington in early May and another was dropped from the Army rolls for failure to return from a leave of absence. (It's not known whether he went South.) Recruiting didn't help either - five recruits deserted who had been assigned while the company was at Fort Hamilton, New York in May.

Below is the roster, with the date and place of enlistment for each enlisted member. (Information courtesy of Greg Kostka)
